“Hickory Dickory Dock” is a beloved nursery rhyme that has delighted children for centuries and is a fun way to help them learn to count as the clock continues to chime. The rhyme is likely based on the Exeter Cathedral in Exeter, England. Home to the Exeter Cathedral astronomical clock, made in the 1400s, it is seen as an intricate and beautiful invention with a fun twist.

​As a devout cat lover, I was tickled to learn that this clock includes a special hole for the cathedral guard cat to use to keep the grand timepiece free of mice.

​In my story, I do not have a cat, but there is a guard of a more sinister nature. Playing off the stressors of a new move, sibling rivalry, and the assumption that young children tend to fabricate outlandish tales, this small family is in for a frightening night of horrors as the grandfather clock’s chimes echo through the isolating darkness.
